Can I Switch Soccer
Clubs Mid-Season?
Changing teams mid-season can be stressful and confusing—but sometimes, it’s necessary. Whether due to coaching style, development needs, logistics, or playing time, here’s what families need to know about switching youth soccer clubs in South Florida.
Is It Possible to Switch Clubs Mid-Season?
Yes, but it depends on the league you’re registered in. Most leagues have specific transfer rules, deadlines, and fees.
League-by-League Transfer Rules
FYSA (Florida Youth Soccer Association)
- ransfers allowed? Yes, but only with proper release paperwork.
- Deadlines: Typically require transfers to be submitted before January 31.
- Restrictions:
- Must have written release from the current club.
- A new player pass will be issued by the new club.
- Fees: Some clubs charge a release fee or may not refund season dues.
US Club Soccer
- Transfers allowed? Yes, but they tend to be less restrictive than FYSA.
- Deadlines: Vary by event and league.
- Requirements:
- Player can switch clubs without release if the prior club hasn’t submitted a roster or hasn’t objected within a window.
- Best for competitive teams like those in NPL or ECNL-R.
ECNL / ECNL-RL
- Transfers allowed? Rarely mid-season.
- Restrictions:
- Often locked to rostered players for the entire season.
- Requires approval from both clubs and the league director.
- College-bound players must consider the impact on exposure and eligibility.
MLS NEXT
- Transfers allowed? Extremely limited.
- Restrictions:
- Transfer requests are handled at MLS NEXT league level.
- Requires release and approval from the league and both clubs.
- May jeopardize future eligibility within the same season.
UPSL Youth / Local Leagues
- Transfers allowed? Rarely mid-season.
- Restrictions:
- Often locked to rostered players for the entire season.
- Requires approval from both clubs and the league director.
- College-bound players must consider the impact on exposure and eligibility.

Will I Have to Pay Again?
That depends on the club contract. Many clubs have:
- Non-refundable registration fees
- Seasonal dues that may or may not be prorated
- Uniform costs you won’t recover
TIP: Always request a breakdown of which fees are non-refundable and whether transfer releases are subject to conditions.
2.
Can My Current Club Prevent Me from Leaving?
- In FYSA, a club can refuse to release you.
- In US Club, they can delay the process but may not permanently block you.
- ECNL and MLS NEXT can restrict movement due to league policies.
If your child isn’t being fielded or mistreated, there are appeal options through FYSA or US Club.
3.
What Steps Do I Need to Take?
- Review your player contract with the current club.
- Communicate directly with your coach or club director about your desire to leave.
- Ask for a release form and clarify any outstanding dues.
- Make sure the new club registers you properly in the new league system.
5. Avoid playing in matches until registration is cleared to avoid penalties or suspension.
4.
Should I Talk to Both Clubs?
Yes. Keeping things professional and respectful will usually lead to a smoother process, especially if your child is trying out for teams in the same area.

Important Considerations
- College scouting: Changing clubs could affect visibility if you move to a lower-level league.
- Team chemistry & playing time: Integrating mid-season isn’t always seamless.
- Travel logistics: Make sure the new club’s schedule works for your family.
6.
When Is the Best Time to Switch?
- Between Fall and Spring seasons (usually December/January) is ideal.
- Summer (post-season) is best for minimal disruption.
