Why Some Clubs Are in Certain Leagues, And Others Are Not

One of the most common questions we hear from parents and players is:

“Why is Club A in MLS NEXT or ECNL, but Club B isn’t?”

Or,

“How do clubs get into top leagues like USL Academy or National League Pro?”

Let’s break it down.

Not Every Club Can Join Every League

Elite youth soccer leagues like MLS NEXT, ECNL, USL Academy, National League Pro, and NPL are selective. That means they don’t allow just any club to join — even if that club has great coaches or talented players. These leagues aim to create a highly competitive, consistent environment, so they limit the number of clubs per region.

For example:

  • There may only be 3 to 5 ECNL clubs allowed in all of Miami-Dade County.
  • USL Academy might choose one or two clubs in South Florida to represent their model.
  • MLS NEXT also selects a limited number of clubs in each metro area based on rigorous criteria.

Who Decides Which Clubs Get In?

Each league has its own leadership and selection committees that evaluate and invite clubs. Here’s how it usually works:

For MLS NEXT:

  • Operated by Major League Soccer (MLS).
  • Clubs must apply and are selected based on quality of coaching, facilities, professionalism, and long-term player development philosophy.
  • Some MLS NEXT clubs are affiliated with MLS professional teams, while others are elite independent academies.

For ECNL (Elite Clubs National League):

  • Run independently, originally created as an alternative to the U.S. Soccer Development Academy.
  • ECNL chooses clubs based on history of development, competitiveness, leadership structure, and geographic balance.
  • A club must also prove it can support travel, competition standards, and education-based development.

For USL Academy:

  • Run by the United Soccer League (USL), which also runs pro teams across the U.S.
  • Clubs must align with the USL’s professional pathway.
  • USL Academy looks for clubs that can develop players for eventual pro or college careers.

For National League (NPL, E64, National League Pro):

  • Operated by US Youth Soccer (USYS).
  • Clubs earn their place either through invitation or performance-based promotion.
  • These leagues value regional balance, club structure, and consistency in high-level competition.

Why Isn’t My Club in One of These Leagues?

It’s not always about the talent of the players.

A club may not meet the league’s off-field requirements — like financial resources, organizational structure, staff credentials, or facilities.

Some clubs choose not to apply for these leagues because they prefer to focus on local development, affordability, or less travel.

Others may apply and be waitlisted, especially in areas like South Florida where there are many strong programs and limited spots available.

It’s Not “Better or Worse” — Just Different Paths

Just because a club isn’t in MLS NEXT or ECNL doesn’t mean it isn’t a great place for your child.

There are many excellent local and regional leagues where players get exposure, development, and fun competition.

Each family should consider:

  • Your child’s goals (college, pro, just having fun)
  • Travel commitments
  • Cost
  • Coaching style and culture
