Major League Soccer Launched “MLS GO” Youth Program
Expanding Access to Rec Soccer

Date of Launch: April 30, 2024

Overview

In a nationwide push to make youth soccer more inclusive, Major League Soccer (MLS) officially debuted MLS GO on April 30, 2024. The initiative aims to deliver elevated recreational soccer experiences across North America for boys and girls aged 4–14 .

Program Vision

MLS GO is designed as the league’s dedicated recreational youth soccer arm, positioned beneath elite pipelines like MLS NEXT and developmental organizations like MLS NEXT Pro. Its goals include:

Affordability & Access: Removing financial barriers through standard‑package pricing, including MLS-branded jerseys, equipment, and coach support

High‑quality coaching materials: Launching two major resources—the MLS GO PLAY FUND (a grant to offset operational costs) and the MLS GO PLAYBOOK (age‑specific training guides)—developed with NANOCOM and delivered via desktop and mobile apps like TeamSnap and MOJO .

Official MLS affiliation: Partnering with state-level youth organizations (Cal North and New Jersey Youth Soccer), giving access to MLS club perks such as branded kits and match-day tickets .

League Operations & Community Impact

MLS GO kicked off in Spring 2024, beginning its rollout with initial partnerships in California and New Jersey. These collaborations brought recreational soccer to over 100,000 youth athletes through participating clubs and state associations .

Kyle Albrecht, MLS GO Vice President, emphasized,

“We look forward to continuing to grow the game at the grassroots level and increase participation and access to soccer through these partnerships and the implementations of the MLS GO PLAY FUND and MLS GO PLAYBOOK.”

Recent Sponsorship Highlight

In May 2025, Messi‑branded hydration drink Más+ by Messi became the first official sponsor of MLS GO, aiming to support young athletes and promote healthy hydration in youth soccer .

MLS President Don Garber also tweeted his excitement over the initiative’s impact:

“MLS is thrilled to partner with Cal North Youth Soccer Association & New Jersey Youth Soccer on MLS GO: expanding access for over 100,000 young athletes and hundreds of clubs. Together, we’re making soccer accessible and fun for all!”

With recreational, travel, and academy-level teams, understanding the right path for your child is essential. 1. Recreational vs. Competitive Soccer: Which One Is Right? • Recreational Soccer (AYSO, YMCA, city leagues) is great for beginners who want to have fun, develop skills, and play locally. • Competitive/Travel Soccer (Weston FC, Miami Rush, Sunrise Prime SC) involves higher-level coaching, tournaments, and potential college scouting opportunities. 2. MLS NEXT, ECNL, and E64: Understanding the Elite Pathways • MLS NEXT: The top boys’ youth league in the U.S., featuring the best talent and a direct path to professional and college soccer. • ECNL: The premier girls’ league that offers high-level competition and a pathway to college scholarships. • Elite 64 (E64): A newer national league that provides an alternative for top-tier players outside of MLS academies. 3. How to Choose the Right Club • Consider the coaching quality, cost, travel commitments, and player development philosophy. • Look for clubs with a strong track record of placing players into college programs. • Attend tryouts and ask current parents about their experiences. With South Florida’s reputation as a soccer powerhouse, finding the right fit can set your child on the path to success in the sport.
